Since technology is literally moving at the speed of light, the movie industry has had to constantly be on alert due to the rampant spread of pirated films. Though many precautions have been instilled, it seems like more than ever, movies both new and old are avaible to watch for free with just a few clicks. Here are the most illegally downloaded movies of 2015, you might be surprised to see who snagged the top spot.
Kingsman: The Secret Service
Pretty much out of nowhere, Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Secret Servicecame storming through the box office Valentine's Day weekend as a major contender for Fifty Shades of Grey. The film follows Eggsy Unwin (Taron Egerton). who is recruited by agent Harry Hart (Colin Firth) as a trainee for the secret service. Though the fun spy flick managed to make $414.4 million dollars at the box office, it has been downloaded illegally approximately 30,922,987 times in 2015. A sequel is scheduled to be released on June 16, 2017. Check out the trailer here.
Terminator: Genisys
No one was all that excited for the fifth film in The Terminator franchise. Terminator: Genisys only made $89 million dollars in the U.S (on a budget of $155 million), but managed to rack in $440.6 million globally. With Arnold Schwarzenegger reprising his role as The Terminator, and Game of Thrones' Emilia Clarke joining the franchise, the story takes place in an alternative universe, as the main characters try and avert Judgement Day. So far, the film has been downloaded illegally about31,001,480 times. We're sure that another film is in the works, but here is the trailer for Genisys if you're curious.
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
The Hobbit trilogy never quite came together like The Lord of the Rings saga. The Hobbit films brought in less and less money with each release, with The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies bringing in $956 million dollars on a $250 million dollar budget. It seems like fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth were less and less likely to venture to the theater to take in the 144 minute film. This probably contributed to the fact that the film has been pirated some 31,574,872 times in 2015. Check out the trailer here.
Fifty Shades of Grey
It's no wonder that this sexy sultry film is one of the most pirated of 2015. Most people probably wanted to ogle Christian Grey from the privacy of their own homes. When E L James' first novel from the Fifty Shades of Grey saga hit the big screen, it raked in $575.5 million dollars. Obviously, a film with such controversial material would get people to flock to the movie theaters. However, with a grand total of32,126,827 illegal downloads, it looks like some people just weren't comfortable seeing it in the theater. It will be interesting to see what the illegal downloads forFifty Shades Darker look like when it hits theaters February 10, 2017. Check out the trailer for Grey here.

American Sniper
Clint Eastwood's American Sniper technically hit theaters Christmas Day 2014. However, after critical acclaim and a wider release, the movie became a huge hit, making $547.5 million dollars on a $50 million dollar budget. Still, not everyone wanted to head to the theaters to see Bradley Cooper as the late Navy Seal Chris Kyle. The film has been downloaded illegally a total of 33,953,737 times. See the trailer for the war film which is based off of Kyle's memoir American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History here.
Mad Max: Fury Road
We're still confused about the hoopla surrounding this film. (Seriously, you couldn't even see Tom Hardy's beautiful face during the majority of it.) Still, Charlize Theron's Furiosa and the film's stunning colors and action sequences brought in audiences to the tune of $375.8 million dollars. However, many people seemed just as content to see George Miller's film on their computers. The film has been downloaded illegally 36,443,244 times this year. Check out the trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road here.
Jurassic World
The fourth installment of the Jurassic Park franchise is the top box office hit of 2015, with Star Wars: The Force Awakens quickly gunning for its place. Using the lovableChris Pratt's newfound mega stardom the dino-loving film has racked in a whopping $1.669 billion thus far. With such crazy high numbers at the box office, it's no wonder that the film has been pirated some 36,881,763 times. The film's sequel will be released on June 22, 2018. Check out the Jurassic World trailer here.
Avengers: Age Of Ultron
Marvel movies are usually favorites for those who pirate movies. (Though we are shocked that Ant-Man didn't make it into the top ten this year.) Coming in at number three for the top grossing films of the year, with a total of $1.405 billion dollars, the amazing cast and special effects didn't stop people from downloading the film illegally 41,594,159 times in 2015. (Making it the third most pirated film of the year as well.) It will interesting to see if Marvel's 2016 films Captain America: Civil War andDoctor Strange will be harder to get a hold of illegally. Watch the trailer for Avengers: Age Of Ultron here.
Furious 7
The late Paul Walker's last film came into theaters in April, paying homage to Walker and bringing home some $1.515 billion dollars. While many flocked to the theaters to see the seventh film in the The Fast and the Furious franchise, Furious 7was still downloaded illegally an astounding 44,794,877 times. Check out the film's trailer here. Still, this tearful farewell to Walker's Brian O'Conner wasn't the most illegally downloaded film of the year. Can you guess which film took the top spot?
Interstellar
It seems rather ironic that the most illegally downloaded film of 2015, actually hit theaters in November of 2014. Christopher Nolan's sci-fi space film starringMatthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway has brought in some $675 million dollars since it's release, but it has been pirated some 46,762,310 times in 2015. This is 15 million times more than the top pirated film of 2014, which was Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. Clearly, illegal downloading is only getting bigger, and movie studios are going to have to get extremely creative if they want to seriously combat it. Watch the trailer for Interstellar here.
